Earlier this offseason, the safety position looked like it was going to be more of a priority for the Buffalo Bills. It seemed unlikely that Jordan Poyer would be returning as he was to test free agency.

The good news is that Poyer did return on a two-year deal and the Bills once again will have Micah Hyde and Poyer as their starting safeties. In addition to the return of Poyer, the team signed former second round pick Taylor Rapp which gives them a backup plan if Damar Hamlin doesn’t return.

While the position looks to be set for this year, Micah Hyde is set to be a free agent next offseason and Poyer is under contract through the 2024 season. This means the Buffalo Bills could add a safety this year and JL Skinner out of Boise State would be a great option.

After this past season, JL Skinner looked to be a Day 2 lock and one of the top safeties in this year’s NFL Draft. However, he suffered a torn pec during training at the end of February that limited his ability to work out for teams and this could drop him in the 2023 NFL Draft.

If he does fall, this could create a chance for the Buffalo Bills to get a great value as Skinner has the talent to be a starter in the NFL. The Bills could let Skinner fully recover and learn the defense as a rookie with the focus on having him ready to replace Micah Hyde as the starter in 2024.
