Khalil Shakir

Another rookie who could see a lot of snaps this week is Khalil Shakir, who was drafted in the fifth round out of Boise State.

Early in training camp, Ken Dorsey mentioned they were still trying to figure out whether Shakir is better outside or inside in the slot. On the team’s first depth chart, Shakir was listed behind Isaiah McKenzie and Jamison Crowder at the slot but the team may look to move him around in the preseason.

Shakir is a player who consistently was making plays and made a positive impression throughout training camp at St. John Fisher University. The hope, similar to Cook, is that the rookie can continue to make that impact in an NFL game and will get a chance to this weekend against the Indianapolis Colts.

In addition to Shakir as a wide receiver, it is worth paying attention to see if he gets a chance to return punts. This is a competition that still seems to be wide open and the rookie is second string behind Tavon Austin.
