The cornerback position was a primary position of concern for the Buffalo Bills and it was almost a guarantee that they would address it either in free agency or the NFL Draft.

According to Patrick Peterson, the Bills seemingly tried to do it in both as he said after he re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings that the Buffalo Bills were one of the teams to reach out to him about signing him, according to Ryan Talbot with syracuse.com.

At one point in his career, Patrick Peterson was one of the best cornerbacks in the league and one that quarterbacks tried to avoid throwing at. While Peterson is still a player that can start in this league, he is not at the same level entering his 12th year in the league.

With Peterson electing to re-sign with the Minnesota Vikings, it opened the door for the Buffalo Bills to draft Kaiir Elam in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. If the Bills had added Peterson, it would have probably been unlikely that they would draft a cornerback or at least one early in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Instead, the Bills now have a cornerback who is just starting his career and has the potential to form one of the best cornerback duos in the league alongside Tre’Davious White. Over the next few years, the Buffalo Bills will consider it lucky that Patrick Peterson elected not to join the team and it opened to door to add a player like Kaiir Elam.
