Pro Football Focus picks Spencer Brown as the one early breakout candidate for the Buffalo Bills

This season the Buffalo Bills offensive line was a pain point for the team for most of the year. They were seemingly shuffling their starting five on a weekly basis, sometimes due to poor performance and sometimes out of necessity with players missing games.

One bright spot though that came from all the changes was third-round draft pick Spencer Brown. The Bills drafted a player who had all the physical tools but there were some questions about how much development he might need before he was ready to start.

That was answered fairly early in the season as he was named the starting right tackle in Week 4 against the Houston Texans. The rookie for the most part played well this season, outside of a game against the Carolina Panthers, where he had to move from right tackle to left tackle after Dion Dawkins was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 two days before that game.

Based on how the rookie season went for Spencer Brown, it shouldn’t be surprising Pro Football Focus would name Brown as the early breakout candidate for the Buffalo Bills.

"Brown was known for having elite measurables for a tackle prospect in the pre-draft process. The 6-foot-8, 290-pound tackle ended up going in the tail-end of Round 3, but his rookie season showed he just might exceed that draft slot. Brown posted a 70.6 run-block grade in 2021. His pass-protection was a hindrance, though. Brown allowed 36 pressures en route to a 49.1 pass-block grade."

According to Pro Football Focus, Brown allowed only one sack all season and was called for eight penalties.

The performance of Brown should give the Buffalo Bills and this coaching staff confidence in the offensive line moving forward. This offseason, the front office will likely be looking to make some changes but those changes will be on the interior of the offensive line as they don’t have to worry about either tackle spot.

When considering Spencer Brown will be entering only his second season and Dion Dawkins, who was named to the Pro Bowl this year, is under contract through the 2024 season this is a great starting point for general manager Brandon Beane.
