Buffalo Bills: Predicting the OL depth chart entering training camp
By Aaron Tully
Ryan Bates (T)
Ryan Bates is entering his third year with the Buffalo Bills, but he has not played much at all. He’s played just 160 snaps in two seasons. 160 snaps is a small sample size for a four-week stretch, let alone two entire years.
Bates has been okay in his very limited snaps, earning a 67.5 grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF). Bates has some tough competition to beat out in a very deep Buffalo offensive line. If Bates does not end up on the 53 man roster or practice squad, he will likely get an opportunity elsewhere.
Tommy Doyle (T)
The Bills selected Tommy Doyle in the fifth round (161st overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft. Doyle is a great athlete with good lateral quickness. He is raw, however. His technique needs a lot of work to be at an NFL level. Doyle will be a project for sure and maybe a practice squad player in year one.
Jordan Devey (T/C)
Jordan Devey was almost exclusively a practice squad player for the Bills in 2020. Considering that Devey played just two snaps for the Bills in 2020 and is 32 years old. He likely does not have a future with the Bills.
Jack Anderson (G)
The Buffalo Bills selected Jack Anderson in the seventh round (236th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech. Anderson is a guard that has quick feet and plays hard. His lack of length is a concern, however. He will likely be a member of the practice squad for the Bills in 2021.
Syrus Tuitele (G)
The Bills signed Syrus Tuitele as an undrafted free agent (UDFA) out of Fresno State. Tuitele has good footwork and a knack for getting to the second level. However, Tuitele has a bad habit of being slow off the snap, which will not bode well for him in the NFL. Tuitele will likely only see the practice squad in 2021.
Steven Gonzalez (G)
Steven Gonzalez was signed by the Bills as a UDFA out of Penn State in the offseason. Gonzalez has good technique but struggles against rushers with speed. Gonzalez might be a practice squad guy in 2021.
Jamil Douglas (G)
Jamil Douglas played for Miami in 2015 and 2016 and spent 2019 and 2020 with the Titans before signing with the Bills in the offseason. Douglas has played 46 games in his career but has only started 11. It would be very surprising if Douglas is wearing a Bills uniform by the time week one rolls around.
