The greatest Buffalo Bills player to wear #44:

Here we have another member of both AFL championship squads. Elbert Dubenion was a “flex” player by today’s standard, and he made the most of it. Dubenion is the second Division III player to make this list (Fred Jackson of Coe College in Iowa).

Only 7 players have worn the double 4 on their chest for the Bills, Dubenion being the first to do so. Apparently, his jersey number requires permission from his family to be worn. Dubenion had over 1100 yards receiving in the 1964 season with 10 touchdowns.

There’s no doubt Dubenion’s skills lent a hand in their success that year. He’d also get the only Pro Bowl selection of his career in 1964 as well. His career totals would be 294 catches for 5,294 yards and 25 touchdowns.

“Duby” would go on to scout for the Dolphins, Bills, and Falcons before ultimately retiring. He sadly passed away at the age of 86 in 2019 due to Parkinson’s disease.
