Who is the fourth wide receiver?

The Buffalo Bills finished near the top of the league in three wide receiver sets but also finished second in the league in four wide receiver sets, playing a 1-0 formation 15% of their snaps last year according to Sharp Football Stats.

That fourth wide receiver is very important to this offense because they do utilize four wide receiver sets more than most teams but how much they play in three wide receiver sets means an injury could create significant playing time for another wide receiver.

Fortunately, the Buffalo Bills do have some options although they have limited experience. If we assume that John Brown is cut and Isaiah McKenzie doesn’t re-sign that means it could be likely one of the following: Isaiah Hodgins, Jake Kumerow or Duke Williams.

Hodgins is an interesting player as he was a sixth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills but missed his entire rookie season due to injury. As Matt Miller notes in his scouting report, he has great hands but doesn’t have great speed. However, with players like Gabriel Davis and Stefon Diggs on the outside, this could help create room over the middle for him to be effective.

If the Buffalo Bills don’t feel confident in some of these options, it could mean they elect to keep Brown or re-sign Isaiah McKenzie or even add another wide receiver in free agency or the NFL Draft.
