Round 7 – Pick 225 overall

Original Selection: Darryl Johnson

Re-Draft Selection: Darryl Johnson

With their first of two picks in the 7th round, the Bills selected edge rusher Darryl Johnson. At the time many viewed him as a very raw project of an edge rusher, but in his two years with the Bills he has made some solid contributions on both defense and special teams.

For the most Johnson has been a solid rotational edge rusher on this defense who has made some place plays here or there on his limited snaps. This past year Johnson particularly stood out as a special teams contributor on the return coverage unit.

In the seventh round it’s always difficult to find talent, let alone someone who can make the roster in their first two years in the league. The Bills scouting department has done a great job under drafting in the later rounds since the arrival of Brandon Beane. The amount of 6th round and later draft picks that have made the roster in the past couple of years is impressive. Players like Darryl Johnson and Jaquan Johnson, Dane Jackson, and Tyler Bass all have a chance to be solid depth or better contributors for years to come.

With all that being said, I will be picking Darryl Johnson with the first of the Bills two 7th round draft picks in this 2019 NFL re-draft. Considering the contributions he has already made to the team with a depth role and the current need for the Bills to get younger at edge rusher, Johnson has a chance to see an increased role for the 2021 season depending on upcoming offseason decisions.
