Sweeping the Patriots

There is no question that for two decades, the New England Patriots ran the AFC East. They were one of the best teams in the NFL and the divisional rivals, including the Buffalo Bills, didn’t put up much of a fight.

The departure of Tom Brady this past offseason opened the division race wide open. However, this didn’t necessarily mean that the Patriots would go away and for the Buffalo Bills to move forward they had to put behind some of the ghosts of the past twenty years.

That meant beating the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills did just that by sweeping them this past year, the first time they accomplished this since the 1999 season. It certainly wasn’t easy, especially the first game, as the Patriots hung around for most of the game as Josh Allen had his worst game of the season.

It was a forced fumble by Justin Zimmer on Cam Newton in the closing minutes that secured the 24-21 win for the Buffalo Bills in their first meeting. The second meeting, which took place on Monday Night Football, wasn’t that close as the Bills were playing their best football and ran away with 38-9 victory in Week 16.

While two wins don’t erase twenty years of dominance, it certainly helps put that behind for this franchise as they move forward.
