During the early 1990s, everyone knew that the Buffalo Bills had one of the best pass rushers in the NFL with Bruce Smith. However, opposite him was Phil Hansen who wasn’t on the level of Smith but was a good pass rusher in his own right.

The Bills drafted Hansen in the second round of the 1991 NFL Draft and he would go on to play all 11 years of his career in Buffalo. During his career, he started 148 games and from 1994 to 1997 he started every game for the Buffalo Bills during that stretch.

Phil Hansen was always steady and from 1992 to 1999 had at least 5.5 or more sacks in all but one season. That one season was 1993 when he started only nine games.

While he was steady, he did have some above average seasons with the 1995 season being Phil Hansen’s best. That year he had 10 sacks and 76 total tackles. While he was only .5 sack behind Bruce Smith, both pass rushers were overshadowed by their teammate Bryce Paup, who won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
