OLB Darron Lee Will Visit The Bills

Ohio State OLB Darron Lee will visit the Bills for a pre-draft workout according to a recent tweet from FoxSports.com NFL reporter Alex Marvez. When Darron Lee first started playing at Ohio State it was not at linebacker but at safety. He was able to bulk up during his time with the Buckeyes, and he eventually switched to linebacker once the weight was put on.

Lee did a tremendous job showing off his athleticism at the combine. He recorded a 40 yard dash time of 4.47 which was the fastest of any linebacker at the event. He also had the top broad jump at 11″1′ and the third best 20-yard shuttle time of 4.20 for linebackers.

He is a cerebral player who is quick to diagnose plays, as well as the route tendencies of opposing players. His ability to pick up quickly on plays probably stems from his time as a quarterback in high school.

He has good speed and overall athletic ability. He is great in coverage which should not be a surprise since he was originally a safety.

He also possesses good pass rush skills but lacks ideal run stopping ability. He was able to tackle well in college but due to his lack of ideal size, one must wonder if that ability will carry over to the NFL.

Lee has done everything he can to keep his weight up in order to address his biggest weakness. So far it has not lead to a decrease in speed but if he continues to bulk up eventually he will slow down.

He is still somewhat new to the linebacker position and has a lot to learn. One could argue that this is a negative on him because he might not be as ready on “day 1” as some other players but it also shows that he probably has the most room for improvement since he is less experienced at the position than the other major prospects.

He projects to be an outside linebacker in the NFL although Lee would tell you that he thinks he could play inside linebacker as well if a team wanted him to. It’s hard to agree with that statement but it’s nice that he believes in himself. In the Buffalo Bills 3-4 defensive scheme he would fit in nicely as an outside linebacker.

He is projected to go in the first round potentially even before the Bills select. He is unlikely to make it to the second round so if the Bills want him they will need to use their #19 overall pick on Lee if he is still available.
