Today, the Bills announced their slate of opponents for the 2012 preseason. Ordinarily, this announcement would be met by a chorus of yawns…but this year’s preseason opener could actually be pretty special.
Buffalo’s opponent in Week 1 of the 2012 preseason will be Washington. Washington traded for the #2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and will likely use that selection to take the Heisman trophy winner – Baylor QB Robert Griffin III. Washington will all but assuredly be handing Griffin the keys to the franchise right away, so there’s a good chance RGIII will in fact be making his pro debut on an August evening in Buffalo.
That night should be a pretty special evening in Ralph Wilson Stadium. Between the excitement surrounding the Bills’ excellent offseason and the hubbub that will undoubtedly follow RGIII around, that will be the rare preseason game with some real juice behind it.
After the Washington contest, Buffalo will travel to Minnesota for a Week 2 exhibition matchup with the Vikings. The team will return home for the third exhibition game to take on Pittsburgh. The third preseason game is typically the one where both teams really try, so it will be interesting to see if Buffalo’s new defensive line gets some shots on Ben Roethlisberger.
The preseason schedule concludes, predictably, with a game at Detroit. This will be the 11th straight preseason in which the Bills and Lions have faced off. That game will undoubtedly be absolutely brutal to watch.
But I’m pretty excited about this preseason slate overall. Can the season start tomorrow?
