Over the start of the last two seasons of the Nix/Gailey regime we have seen the Buffalo Bills enter each season with five receivers on the depth chart. The only caveat being last year when Brad Smith was aboard as a QB/WR/KR/…Last season saw the front office trade away the proverbial the number 1 receiver in Lee Evans to allow the likes of Stevie Johnson and company to step up and gain valuable experience. We saw Johnson and Nelson step up, and also a slew of injuries which caused CJ Spiller and the aforementioned Brad Smith forced into WR duties.

I am not going to lie Bills fans, I am concerned over this years wide receiver class yet again. Let’s say that Brad Smith presumably again fills that “sixth” receiver spot (to save a roster spot for a long snapper and kick off specialist). Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, and I will add rookie TJ Graham as locks to this team. That now leaves two receivers left. Donald Jones has had the inside track for some reason on the number 2 receiver spot. This has had me confused for the second straight year. I just don’t see it with Jones. I highly doubt he would make the roster of almost any other team, but for the Bills…he could be a starter. I really hope Jones proves me wrong, but after watching football for nearly 25 years, I just don’t see it.

It is very interesting that after scouring the internet for camp reports day in and day out, some say Marcus Easley has played poorly and other say he should be the starter. I guess it all depends on whether you are a supporter of Jones or not.

Recent history has shown this Bills fan that five receivers and Brad Smith are just not enough. Especially when the Bills offense loves to spread the field with four and five wide more than any team in the league. What do you think Bills fans, are five receivers enough for your 2012 Buffalo Bills?

It appears a former Bills first round pick didn’t show enough to even make it through the entire preseason. Today the Jacksonville Jaguars announced that they had waived Lee Evans after signing him this off-season. Evans, a first round pick in 2004, played in Baltimore last season. He had only 4 catches for 74 yards in his first season away from Buffalo. His best season came in 2004 when he caught 82 passes for 1,292 yards.

Many questioned the Bills trading Evans, but it appears that the loss for the Bills was quite minimal. It is strange to see such a huge drop off however. Even though his stats were digressing, he did have 37 catches for 578 yards his last year in Buffalo. Now he is once again teamless after being waived for the second time in a year.

In the end Lee Evans was unable to bring anything to the Jaguars wide receiver core like they had hoped, and both sides will now move ahead.

The Bills are lacking when it comes to a second wide receiver, but I can’t see Evans returning to the Bills. Even though there is some familiarity I believe the Bills made it clear that this front office is not interested in Evans’ services and felt the team was better in his absence. Even though it may seem slightly appealing, I wouldn’t expect to see Evans in the blue and red again in his career.
