The Buffalo Bills added a new offensive assistant, Doug Socha, that has been working a lot with our running backs. Who is he?

The Buffalo Bills added an offensive weapon last week, but he isn’t someone we’ll be seeing on the field. Instead, Doug Socha will be an offensive assistant that will be scoping from the booth.

Doug Socha has made quite a coaching journey so far, but has finally made it to the NFL — something he never would’ve imagined. In a recent interview, he stated:

"“In the coaching profession, you never know what path you’re going to go down. Three months ago, I never would’ve fathomed working for an NFL team, so we’ll see what the future holds.”"

Socha has a lot of ties to Buffalo, being a native of North Tonawanda. He would later become an assistant coach at the University of Buffalo, a stint that lasted a total of five seasons. After he left the school, he began to pursue his head coaching career.

His first job came at American Heritage-Delray high school in Florida. He spent two seasons with the school, compiling a record of 22-5 as well as a Class 3A Championship. His performance with the school led to his head coaching stint with Oxbridge Academy, also in Florida.

At the time, Oxbridge had just started a football team and wanted Socha to architect the team and build it from scratch. It didn’t take long for him to turn the school’s team into one of the better small-school teams in the state. The team finished 9-3 and won the district title, but fell in the Class 3A regional finals.

After the season ended, a shake-up happened that included the school’s president and athletic director. It ultimately led to Socha’s contract not getting renewed, leaving him without a job. That’s when he started to search for other coaching opportunities, Buffalo being one of them. After he met the staff in April, he followed up in June and ended up joining the team.

Doug Socha commented on being added to the Bills’ coaching staff:

"“I think every coach desires to work at different levels. I didn’t ever think of this opportunity while I was at Oxbridge, but I’m just grateful and thankful for it. It’s been a tremendous learning experience for a coach.”"

As for his role on the team, it seems he will be responsible for “scouting future opponents, breaking down film and working on special projects,” according to Sun Sentinel. So far, he has been seen with the running backs a majority of the time and will be up in the booth on Sundays analyzing the game.
