Can Mario Williams Have a Career Year in 2014?

Mario Williams is the star defensive end of the Buffalo Bills and he’s had 23.5 sacks since coming from the Houston Texans in 2012 after signing a six-year 96 million dollar contract. This will be the third different defensive scheme he will be playing in as many seasons with Buffalo which was the main reason why safety Jairus Byrd left for greener pastures this off-season and signed with the New Orleans Saints.

There are many factors that will help Mario Williams have a career season in 2014 including that he doesn’t have to carry the defense on his back alone thanks to pro bowl teammates on his defensive line in Marcel Dareus and Kyle Williams. Going with that the Bills secondary is better this year than last despite losing the aforementioned Byrd and with that coverage being better, it will give the defensive line more time to get after the quarterback and sack him.

Also the team’s run defense likely will be considerably better lead by free agent signing inside linebacker Brandon Spikes should provide ample opportunities to create more third down and long situations thus more obvious passing downs. Mario Williams’ pass rushing career best for a season was his second season in the league when he had 14 sacks; however his best all around year was clearly last year when then defensive coordinator Mike Pettine lit a fire under the defense, Jim Schwartz should do the same.

Being in a smaller market like Buffalo as compared to Houston there seems to be less pressure on him in some ways; however the fan base tends to be on the smarter side. The fans also are extremely loyal as they are like the post office, no matter the weather we will be at Ralph Wilson Stadium cheering like crazy.

All and all, Mario Williams should have his best season of his career in 2014 just in time to celebrate his 30th birthday in January. That is how I see it happening  but what do you think? Like this article, Share it with friends on Twitter and G+ and comment below so we can discuss this more!
