2014 Season Expectations: Tight End Lee Smith

Lee Smith is far from a flashy player for in the league let alone on the Buffalo Bills and most fans likely wouldn’t spot him besides the fact that he’s 6-foot-6 and 269 pounds. Smith hasn’t had a stellar receiving career as he’s had only had 102 yards receiving and two touchdown receptions with one being kind of what he’s known as the guy that fell in the stands and if you look it up on YouTube, it’s the first video you’ll see.  While he will never blow anyone away with his speed down the field as at the combine he ran a 4.94 40 yard dash time, by comparison second overall pick Greg Robinson ran a 4.92 and he’s roughly 60 pounds heavier than Smith and plays offensive tackle.

That being said, Lee Smith is a hellacious run blocker and should be on the field frankly more on running downs because he can act like a sixth offensive lineman out there. If Smith is out there picking up the block on an outside linebacker it might spring C.J. Spiller, Fred Jackson or even newcomer Bryce Brown for a sizable gain or even six points. One of the best parts about Smith was the Bills didn’t even have to give up a draft pick to get his services as the New England Patriots originally drafted him in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL draft and thought they could hide him on their practice squad for a while and they thought wrong.

What are my expectations for Lee Smith in 2014? It’s hard to say for sure since he doesn’t put up much in the way of stats but he might get 10 catches this year for about 100 yards and maybe a touchdown reception too.
