Kiko Alonso was a star last year for the Buffalo Bills and made an impact league wide as a rookie. Alonso had 159 tackles last season up the middle, with four interceptions with two of them against the then defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens. This could be a tremendous loss for a team that yet to make the playoffs in this century, which is the longest streak in the NFL.

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said that “We have learned tonight that Kiko Alonso injured his knee while working out in Oregon. We do not have the details at this point, but early indications are that it may be significant.” Alonso tore his ACL in 2010 during the Oregon Ducks spring game so this is familiar territory for him no matter how depressing the news might be. His return timetable wasn’t clear to begin with as he already had off-season hip surgery, this new injury just further clouds the matter. If it is those dreaded three letters of ACL again, the free agent pool has been picked clean. This might mean the Bills will have to watch the waiver wire intently during training camp to see who becomes a free agent.

The Bills do have better depth then they have had in the last few seasons with players like Nigel Bradham who could likely play the weakside position but it is unlikely he will play it is as good as many Bills fans figured Kiko Alonso would play it. While Alonso wasn’t the vocal leader you see out of many linebackers, however he did demonstrate how to play the game and position by example.

All and all while this isn’t great news coming out of Buffalo on late Tuesday night for the defense and Kiko Alonso’s 2014-2015 season, it might give another player a chance to emerge and becoming a star like Ty Powell for example. Kiko Alonso was building up a legendary following through social media and through out his rookie campaign for his exceptional play and his lack of contact with the local and national media.

What do you Bills fans think of this potentially horrible news coming out of Western New York? Let me know by leaving a comment below!
