Preston Brown, rookie middle linebacker who was the Buffalo Bills third round draft pick who play his college ball for Charlie Strong’s University of Louisville Cardinals. Brown is just simply making plays in practice under the radar since he wasn’t the big flashy pick in 2o14 NFL Draft, nor was he a big name free agent acquisition like his fellow middle linebacker Brandon Spikes was.
This is eerily reminiscent to last year after the Bills drafted now star linebacker Kiko Alonso in the sense that he was just making plays like crazy in practice and wasn’t really well known due to a highly touted college teammate . (Dion Jordan) Alonso was routinely getting physical in practice even though he wasn’t supposed to.
Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 251 pounds, Preston Brown has the ideal size for the “Thumper” role at middle linebacker; however he is doing much more as he is engaging offensive players at the point of attack by wrapping them up. From the highlights of his college career it looks like he’s a sure tackler where once a player is wrapped up, Brown doesn’t let go until they are on the ground. In addition, most middle linebackers don’t get many snaps in nickel packages in fact usually it’s the two outside linebackers that play this role as they are usually better at covering running backs and tight ends; however Brown is excelling in this role so far as well.
If this is the case and he makes some big plays and maybe learns from Spikes and ultimately overtakes him during the season as the starting middle linebacker, Preston Brown could be the league’s defensive rookie of the year. All and all, Preston Brown might not be the household name just yet; however if he has a similar year like Kiko Alonso did last season, he will be much talked about in how did this guy slip into the third round?
