Marcell Dareus was arrest earlier in the month. Dareus was caught with synthetic drugs while in Alabama. This is a felony drug charge and he could face jail time as well as a suspension from the league.
Dareus stated, that the information that the reporters put out was incorrect and he is not a bad guy.
“It’s not what you guys think,” Dareus said, via Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “The media put things out there the wrong way. You [reporters] put things out there. I’m not really going to say [what is inaccurate]. I didn’t really pay that much attention to it. I got a lot of text messages and things.”
Here in Buffalo, last season, Dareus had issues telling time, for the most part, and was punished in house by the coaching staff for his inability to show up for team scheduled events on time.
The Buffalo Bills exercised a 2015 contract extension option for Dareus just days before he was arrested in Alabama. The contract extension is only guaranteed for injury. Basically, this means that if Dareus is brought up on legal charges, jail time or a suspension then the Bills have the option to release Dareus and his contract is worth nothing and the Bills are not obligated to pay him. The only way Dareus would get his money if he is released if it is due to injury.
Will Dareus be a free agent come August? I think that Dareus is a solid defensive tackle in the league and he will do well when he gets his head on straight. Dareus does have some timing issues and not the off the field drug issues that will stay with him from here on out. I think Buffalo sits Dareus down and tells him how it is going to be. Marrone has even said that Dareus is very productive when he is there. Buffalo needs to shorten the lease and get him in gear. He is a part of one of the best defensive lines in the league, and maybe Schwartz is the guy to get him where he needs to be.
