As Minnesota received the nod for Super Bowl 52, I began to wonder if Buffalo could ever host the event. A lot of stars would have to align, but let’s peek into our crystal ball and see if it is even possible.
First, we need a new stadium and a stadium that could host the event. Seating, parking and event space would be a must. I don’t think a dome is necessary, but I look to a venue like Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis as my guide. You can open the roof or close it and there is a ton of natural light.
Second, where to build? If you build the stadium east of the city you may have an issue. Indianapolis did a great job of showcasing the downtown area alongside their stadium because the stadium is within walking distance to the night life. In the case for Buffalo, the waterfront project or Niagara Falls seems logical in this case. Niagara Falls creates a whole new set of problems with roads and traffic.
Third, Buffalo would have to show they are capable of handling such an event. What I mean is this: Is there a plan in place to clear the roads in the event of an early February blizzard? Is there hotel space? Plus a ton of other items.
I think western New York has a lot to offer a Super Bowl visitor. The falls, casinos, Canada, etc. Buffalo is a long way away from this becoming a reality, but if Minnesota can do it, why not Buffalo?
