Some teams get it and some teams do not; quarterback is the most important position on the field. You cannot have too many good ones on a team. The Buffalo Bills do not get it.
The Buffalo depth chart at the quarterback position sits like this: EJ Manuel, Thad Lewis, Jeff Tuel, and Dennis Dixon. This hardly puts fear into opponents.
Now before you go all medieval in your responses, I am an EJ Manuel guy. He is the starter on this team and will make or break what the Bills will do. But let’s look at what some other teams did in the draft even though they have a settled starting quarterback.
The Cincinnati Bengals have Andy Dalton (a missed pick by the Bills) as their starter. Jason Campbell is a veteran backup, but they still drafted AJ McCarron.
The Evil Empire Patriots, with Tom Brady as a starter and Ryan Mallet as a qualified backup, chose Jimmy Garappolo early in the draft.
Even the Jets with Michael Vick and Geno Smith picked up Tajh Boyd.
None of these drafted quarterbacks will see any action this year, but it shows the mentality of other teams and how serious they take the quarterback position. They think ahead. I just don’t see that in the Buffalo Bills.
Good teams look beyond their current roster. They plan for the future. Maybe the Bills are so far behind in the rebuilding process that I am being ridiculous. If that is the case, can we stop talking about the playoffs with this team?
It is obvious that the Bills desperately want to win now. Doug Whaley showed that on draft day. I just don’t see the team winning if EJ goes down. I pray it never comes to that and EJ Manuel is the next Jim Kelly, but even Jim Kelly needed Frank Reich every now and again.
Thad Lewis is no Frank Reich.
