Sammy Watkins: The Bills Get Their Guy

And there you have it. The Bills pulled off a trade with the Cleveland Browns and moved up into the 4th spot to get in some eyes the most electric offensive player in this year’s draft.  Putting more weapons around EJ has been the goal it seems as this organization would no doubt like to see their prize draft selection last season succeed.

No question Watkins will put some excitement into this offense but will he be that final piece that this offense needs?   I still think they need to address their line but Sammy will no doubt add a great amount of skill to the roster.

Watkins as we all know played his college football at Clemson.   Since he started he has come in and produced.   With his explosive speed and vision he can change any game at any time. You can see more of his stats here.

Strengths:  exceptional speed, plays well above his size, tracks the ball well, turns small plays into major gains, can return and is always able to take it to the house every time he touches the ball.

Weaknesses: could work on route running, is more of an outside runner and doesn’t venture towards the center of the field that often and could work on his awareness.

With this pick I’m wondering if it will come back to haunt them.   Did they really need to move up to get Sammy?  Could they have stayed put and went after a different receiver or even Ebron the TE?  I wonder with this team having other needs losing picks to gamble may not be the best decision to make.  That said I like what the Bills did as no one really thought they would move up after hearing the rumors in the past few weeks.

As the interviews will start and everyone gets to know Watkins we will see how this pick will pan out.   Something people may not know yet is Sammy grew up a Buffalo Bills fans.  Could he be the one to help turn this organization around?

I was against trading up before the draft. I thought we should stay put at #9 and snag Ebron if none of the elite players drop to us (Matthews and Evans were the only ones that had a chance to drop that far). However, once the shock wore off, I have changed my mind. I think the Sammy Watkins pick is great.

Watkins is a number one receiver, and we do not have a number one receiver on our roster (analysts constantly point this out). Given our situation, either Stevie or Mike Williams will be gone after this year. Instead of waiting around and seeing what happens, we got our replacement for either in this draft.

I believe this is an ‘all-in-for-the-playoffs’ type of move, and it’s about time we made it.

That being said, we MUST address the tackle position in round 2 or 3 (preferably 2). If we strike minimally decent gold at a later round tackle, I love this move.
