We are days before the Buffalo Bills will make their appearance at the NFL draft. I love this time of year. Misinformation abounds and teams are never telling you anything remotely close to the truth. War rooms are locked up tight and anything can happen. So what does the brain trust at One Bills Drive do come draft day?
One thing I hope they do not do is move up in the draft. I can almost see the beads of sweat arise from Doug Marrone’s brow as he is watching tape of Sammy Watkins. Doug Whaley may be dreaming of Clowney lining up with Mario Williams to frighten Tom Brady into submission. Please guys, be sensible and do not mortgage the future for one of these players.
The Buffalo Bills must maintain as many draft picks as possible in the upcoming years; even add to that amount if possible. With the death of Ralph Wilson the ownership of the Bills is in question and the location of the team in future years is in question. The team already has a hard time attracting free agents, this just adds to that difficulty. Do not compound the problem by trading away future draft picks.
My solution is simple. Trade down. You did a masterful job last year of trading down. You got the quarterback you wanted and added a linebacker that should have been rookie of the year. Please, please, please do that again. I know a lot of that is reliant on finding a trade partner, but if the opportunity presents itself, I hope Doug Whaley would pull that trigger.
A lot has happened this off-season and some not done well. Jairus Byrd is now a Saint and the Bills have nothing to show for it except for having to fill a huge hole. They were able to find a stop-gap linebacker to help Kiko Alonso, but I think the biggest mistake the Bills have made is not addressing the quarterback position. By all accounts they didn’t even look toward a veteran to help EJ Manuel.
Will the Bills look at a quarterback in the draft? They were very quiet about their affection for Manuel last year. Is there a quarterback that has second round potential that the Bills are not telling us about? I sure hope so.
