EJ Manuel and the NFL Draft

Now that the disaster that was called professional hockey is finished in Buffalo (although one could argue it was finished in November), Buffalo sports junkies can now focus on the NFL draft.  My focus is on the quarterback position.

I have read all kinds of articles on the quarterbacks in Buffalo.  Items from the Bills do not have a true starter to where EJ Manuel would rank in the 2014 draft.  Although I am not ready to throw EJ Manuel under the bus, I am concerned that the brain trust seems to be ignoring the position during the free agent period.  Could they just be playing coy with us or do they truly believe that this part of the roster is complete?  Frankly, at this time of the year I tend to not believe anything coming out of any NFL front office.

An interesting comment came from Peter King and his MMQB column in that quarterback needy teams will be passing on the position until the second round.  His reasoning is there are too many other good players to merit taking one of the quarterbacks on the radar.  Could this be a blessing at the number nine pick?  This Buffalo Bills could have the opportunity to take the best quarterback in the draft.  Could this actually happen?  If it did who would you select to lead the football team in Buffalo?

I don’t see how you’re NOT throwing EJ under the bus by continually harping on the fact that there are QBs to be had in this years’ draft. You’ve got to consider the unintended consequences of Buffalo drafting a QB – ANY QB – at #9 after telling EJ and swearing up and down to the fans that HE was the man at that position for this club. What kind of messages are you sending with an act like that? I see NO Qb – including the media maven Manziel – bringing more to the Bills than what they already have, and have invested, in Manuel. Let the kid have (1) a full year as the starter, (2) a full year in the system with NO injuries from start to finish, and (3) a full year WITH an actual QB coach and hopefully some more talent at the skill WR position, before we entertain thoughts of “well, this guy might not be the player we thought he was.” Remember, too, that Jim Kelly himself didn’t start his career with guns blazing – HE had his ups and downs, too. Let’s keep a proper perspective here, and TRY to be as fair to EJ Manuel as possible – NO judgement until he’s had what I’ve listed above.

As far as the draft is concerned, don’t the Bills have enough other holes to fill without people harping on the QB position? I can see them drafting one in the mid-to-later rounds as a backup, like Pitt’s Tom Savage – or depending on “best player available,” and all that ….but let’s view the roster holes in TOTAL, rather than keep harping on ONE position. Buffalo needs to upgrade its’ OL; it needs to look at getting WR talent that HELPS EJ and the team get better ….and they need another linebacker or two. Possibly another safety wouldn’t hurt, either. Anybody disagree with that assessment? Cause that’s what Marrone & co. have been saying for months.

Let’s just see where we are AFTER the draft, KNOWING that EJ Manuel has ALREADY been declared the starter for this team.

There is no guarantee that EJ will be able to play the full year. He had THREE knee injuries in his first year in the league. That could be a harbinger of things to come. The QB position is by far the most important position in the NFL, there is no reason to handcuff yourself to one option. Even if EJ is the second coming of Jim Kelly then you have another good young QB to use as trade bait.
