Jairus Byrd has left the building and the Buffalo Bills have nothing to show for it. At least the Sabres got something in return for their unrestricted best player. The difference is the Bills could have kept him around, but opted not to use the franchise tag. They just let, arguably, the best safety in the game walk out the door.
Why have I continued to allow myself to be beaten up by this franchise for over forty years? Why do I continue to wear my Buffalo Bills merchandise here in Ireland? Why is my loyalty to this team remaining in place when I see moves like this?
I wrote in a recent article that the Bills MUST re-sign Byrd to make an impact in 2014 and beyond (click here). I also wrote that the Buffalo Bills cannot attract free agents in their prime (click here). Now the Bills will have to consider a safety early on in the draft and it throws the direction of the team into a detour of sorts.
I can hear the detractors now, “If he didn’t want to be here, let him walk.” This is unfortunate as the Buffalo Bills have become a minor league football team training players for other teams. Jairus Byrd got his wings in Buffalo due to the draft, but now will fly like an eagle in another location. This Byrd has flown and as a Buffalo Bills fan I don’t know if I should be mad or just realize that this is the ultimate reality of most top tier players that come through the Buffalo farm system. The Byrd flu has struck in Buffalo and the cure will be costly.
