The Buffalo Bills need another quarterback. I don’t mean that EJ Manuel isn’t the starter; Doug Marrone has already made that clear. Manuel, or any other starter in the NFL, will struggle to stay upright for 17 weeks. It is a brutal sport and the odds are against anyone making it through unscathed. Teams need two capable quarterbacks.
The Bills need a backup that can challenge Manuel for the starting job, even if that means EJ becomes the backup for a spell. Unfortunately the names that could meet this need are few, but as I looked at the list of unrestricted free agents a couple names were intriguing.
Michael Vick comes with a hefty price tag. The Bills are well under the cap, but do they want to spill that kind of money on Vick? The thought of Michael Vick under center does excite me though.
Josh Freeman, once expelled by the Buccaneers, was a name floated around last year. That name should be floated around again.
Matt Flynn should garner a look or two also. Although I always wonder when this guy is actually going to bust through and become the quarterback everyone expects him to be. Maybe he never will.
Of course there is always the draft too. One name that intrigues me is Zach Mettenberger from LSU. He is very raw and should fall to a later round in the draft due to a torn ACL. He is big and with proper coaching could be a diamond of a find. Mettenberger wouldn’t be an immediate threat to Manuel’s reign, but would be an interesting addition to say the least.
Free agency begins on March 11th. Do any of these guys end up in the red, white and blue?
