Earlier in the off-season we looked at viable QB options for the Buffalo Bills for their back-up. The best option, I said, for the Bills would be that they hire a QB coach to take some of the pressure of OC Nathaniel Hackett. The Bills did just that. Also, bringing in a veteran QB, which they attempted last year with Kevin Kolb, but injuries ended his season and what seems to be his career.
With the QB coach hired, we looked towards the back-up QB at this point. One person I mentioned that would and could be a viable option is that of Matt Cassel. Cassel has recently opted out of this 2014 contract which he would have received 3.7M from the Minnesota Vikings.
Cassel is a viable option but will the Bills make a move to bring in someone like Cassel. Whether Cassel is in the mind set that he is a starter or becoming that journeyman back-up is left up in the air but with his stint in Minnesota as a back-up I believe that he will be willing to come to a team knowing he is that back-up guy.
Other possibilities for Cassel could be the New England Connection in Houston with Bill O’Brien. He could land in Atlanta where the KC connection is strong with Scott Pioli as their GM. A third possibility is Tampa Bay where former head coach for the Vikings Leslie Frazier (DC) could put in a good word for Cassel as Tampa Bay staff is not completely sold on Glennon.
For the Bills, there are some people standing in the way, so if they are going to move towards a veteran QB and Cassel, they will need to bring something that is enticing for Cassel and money might be the only thing that they can put on the table. Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
