The Browns Almost Lost Their Guy

After nearly a month of searching Cleveland the last team without head coach filled that opening today. Now former Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will get his first chance as the man in charge. After reading and learning about how everything happened, it seemed like the Browns almost missed out on getting their guy.

In a report speaking with WGR 550 Sports Radio Pettine appeared to be more concerned about leaving his prior team just hanging around waiting for an answer. It was understood that Mike talked with (head coach) Marrone and said if this was to go any longer he may have thought of pulling his name out of consideration. Not being fair to the Bills organization in how this played out leaving them watching and waiting like everyone began to give Pettine second thoughts.

Eventually Pettine as we all know was indeed named the 15th head coach in Brown’s history. He will now start to assemble a staff and get ready for his first year. Reports have come out already that he/Browns have asked permission to speak with the Bills LB coach Jim O’Neil to possibly fill the defensive coordinator position.

So as the Bills will now be searching for its fourth defensive coordinator in four years I’m sure the players will be very interested to see which direction they go. I would say they should promote from within as it may be good to keep a similar scheme. If they go outside and that guy wants to run his own it could be an interesting year for this defense.
