The Bills Are In Need Of A Tight End

Watching these games everyone can see what this team needs to build and progress but certain positions may sometimes be overlooked. A position I watch a lot as it’s begun to be very valuable these days is the tight end.

The Bills have lacked skill with their tight ends for years. Looking back at stats you have to go back to 2001 (Riemersma) when the Bills had a tight end in the top 10 for receptions and/or yards for that matter. To me that’s an extremely long time for a team to basically put out a useless player that could potentially help your team if it wasn’t neglected.

As you could see other teams have taken full advantage of acquiring a versatile tight end and using them often in their offenses. Top tight ends people have been accustomed to watching over the years are: Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham to name a few. Hearing those names I don’t think anyone would not want one of these guys on their roster seeing what they have done. On the other side here are some of the Bills that have played the position throughout the years: Scott Chandler, Jay Riemersma, Pete Metzelaars, Robert Royal, Mark Campbell and Lee Smith to name some. Looking at that list realistically how many of these Bills would be wanted by other teams? In my opinion most of these guys would be scooped up as a 2nd or 3rd tight end but a number one? It just blows my mind that some of the top tight ends listed above have had multiple years better in receiving than our top wide receivers have had.

With Chandler basically gone after this season the Bills may have two guys looking to take over the number one spot. Tony Moeaki and Chris Gragg may definitely be in the discussion but in the end I don’t think any of them will be the guy. Look for the Bills to draft a top flight guy to be in this offense next season. A wasted 15 years at a position that could have paid off big time will hopefully now be viewed at differently.
