Jarius Byrd is signed as a 1 year franchised tender. After this year, the Bills have options with Byrd but they are limited. The Bills are not able to talk to Byrd, contract-wise, until after the season but with 5 games left in the season, it is coming close to that time.
Is Byrd interested?
On the John Murphy Show, Byrd did state that Buffalo wasn’t out of the realm of possibilities.
“Of course, absolutely, open minded, absolutely. Definitely,” said Byrd. “I’m not going to close my mind on anything. I’m open to whatever might come. I’m leaving that to my agent and those guys. I’m out of it. I’m just going to play the best football I can for the team and try to win games and then that stuff will get handled eventually.”
“I’ve always said all along I want to be where I’m wanted and if it’s here then great,” Byrd said. “I am definitely excited just to win games. I’ve been here for four years so my heart is definitely here and wanting to win here and finish what you start.”
Buffalo’s defensive scheme has been very successful on takeaways and pressuring the quarterback. This plays right to where Byrd’s strengths are. Is this enough to keep Byrd in a Bills uniform? Having 6 safeties on the roster might play a little bit into the decision, but it shouldn’t hold a lot of weight.
What will be the determining factor is not roster size, or play on the field, but the monetary value that the Bills put on Byrd as well as what Byrd feels he is worth.
If the Bills are unable to attract Byrd monetarily, they still have the option to place the franchise tag on him again for another year and have a go at it next year.
I don’t think that this will go over well if it is the path that is chosen. It will cost the Bills more money up front and will most likely push Byrd to the same point he was as at as a hold out in the beginning of the year.
