Playoff Probabilities

With a win this past week against the Jets, the Buffalo Bills are still mathematically in the playoff hunt.  They, however, do not control their destiny completely, but will have some say it in.  They need to win out and finish 9-7 to have a chance.  They also will need help from other teams as well.

Along with the Bills, there are 8 other teams that are vying for, in essence, 1 wildcard spot.  Denver and KC will take up a division spot and a wildcard spot.  This leaves 3 division spots and 1 wildcard.  Unless the Bengals, Patriots and Indianapolis have a major falling out, they should all win their divisions.  Although, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Pats completely tank and Buffalo win the division at 9-7, but that is wishful thinking at this point.

The eight other teams are the Dolphins, and Jets both at 5-5 right now.  Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, San Diego, Oakland and Tennessee round out the eight teams all at 4-6.  Even if the latter teams finish 4-2 in their last 6 they will have an 8-8 record.  The Dolphins and Jets will have to go .500 in their last 6 to finish at 8-8 which will leave the Bills the sole team in 9-7.

We will look at other possibilities and tie breakers later and come back each week as things start to unfold.
