As we have just approached the quarter mark, the former Oregon University standout linebacker, Kiko Alonso has been huge for the Bills thus far. As Kiko was not too shabby in college during his final year compiling 74 total tackles and 4 interceptions along with 2 forced fumbles. Now he currently leads the Bills in interceptions with 3. He also leads the Bills in tackles with 32 (19 solo and 13 assisted). The only rookie that has more tackles than Kiko is Alec Ogletree from the University of Georgia. But Alec has not been as good as Kiko when it comes to pass defense. Kiko is also on of the key leaders for this Bills defense as it is not only shown in his stats but he is involved in every play he can. Doug Marrone said this about Kiko Alonso…
I think Kiko has done an outstanding job, he really has,” coach Doug Marrone said. “For a young man coming in and doing the things (he has). There’s been a little bit of ups and downs, but that’s not a knock on him. That is what happens with young players. I’m extremely excited to see him perform when the pads come on. I’m excited about it and I’m looking forward to it. He’s done a very good job”
With the way Alonso has been playing lately he seems to be an obvious candidate for defensive rookie of the year. The real question for Alonso is if he can keep this kind of production going throughout the whole season. I see him putting up huge numbers for the Bills. I think he will lead the Bills in tackles somewhere around 130 to 140 and will ultimately barely beat out Alec Ogletree for defensive rookie of the year thanks to his surprisingly good pass defense ability.
