Tragedy Strikes Western New York High School Football

Bills news aside for today as yesterday news surfaced of a high school player that has passed away from his injuries. Damon W. Janes (16) a junior was the player who took a helmet to helmet hit in the 3rd quarter of Friday night’s game between Brocton and Portville.

Brocton the team he played for is a village in Chautauqua County New York. Approximately an hour from Buffalo and is in section 6 of the Western New York high school football league.

The helmet to helmet hit on Friday stopped the game in it tracks. He was taken off on a stretcher and rushed to Olean General. Later that night he was then taken to Women and Children’s Hospital. From there family, friends and others who heard about the unfortunate incident waited to hear any news. When asked by a local news station Portville Superintendent said the Brocton student suffered serious injuries.

Yesterday the worst possible news came out about Damon. He lost his fight with the head injuries sustained. The family has now asked for privacy during this time but expressed gratitude to everyone who prayed and/or helped during this really heard time. Friends, students and faculty will also be grieving the loss and for that the school will have counselors this week. Friends and family also had a big response on twitter when they had people hastag #PrayForDamon.

So as the football season moves on for everyone this just shows you how fast it can all be gone. Thoughts and prayers are for sure with the family as they go through this very hard time.
