Bills vs Colts: Behind The Numbers

EJ Manuel and Andrew Luck wish each other well.

The first preseason game between the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts resulted in some pretty impressive numbers for the Bills. Here is a breakdown of some of the more notable numbers after week one of the preseason:

The Bills had 451 offensive yards which averaged 5.3 yards a play,  315 of those yards were passing yards as Buffalo’s two rookie quarterbacks had little trouble moving the ball.

Marquise Goodwin had a beautiful 107 yard kick return as Buffalo racked up 181 yards on 3 kick returns and Goodwin averaged 80 yards on 2 returns.

The Bills broke a club record for points scored in a preseason game with 44

Buffalo had the 2nd highest number of offensive plays at 85 with the Eagles topping the list at 86

Marcus Easley has the 2nd most receiving yards with 94  behind Chad Bumphis of the Miami Dolphins who has 111 but has also played 2 games. Both Players are tied for most receptions at 7.

Jeff Tuel was 19/23 for 212 yards,  -2 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns,  while EJ Manuel was 16/21 for 107 yards with 28 yards rushing and 1 TD

Jeff Tuel has the best quarterback rating in the league with a 134.1, EJ Manuel is 7th with a 102.7

EJ Manuel averaged 9.3 yards per rushing attempt (3) which was higher than CJ Spillers 9.0 on 4 carries

Buffalo took 9 penalties for a loss of 74 yards.

15 different Bills players had at least 1 catch for positive yardage.

7 different Buffalo players had at least 3 rushing attempts.

Out of Buffalo’s 27 first down conversions 17 of them came from passing plays, and Stevie Johnson didn’t even dress for the game

Buffalo fumbled 4 times including 1 each from both quarterbacks,  both of those fumbles were lost to the Colts.

All in all the Buffalo Bills were very impressive in their first showing of 2013. They take on the Minnesota Vikings this Friday at 7pm, and I think it is safe to assume that they will continue to produce positive numbers. This new coaching staff seems to have really pulled this team together in all the right ways. I’ll be looking forward to seeing if Jeff Tuel doesn’t beat out Kevin Kolb for the the number 2 spot because that kid sure was impressive against the Colts. What do you guy’s think about the Bills after the first preseason game? Do we got a shot?

Poor to work on those penalties, I love that Miami finally managed to only have two for their second game. I hope that I am looking at a Fins/Bills dominated division. Of course I want Miami to come out on top, but I will be happy with a WC spot as long as the Pats/Jets fall off into obscurity this year. New AFC predictions.
    1- Miami 11-5
    2- Bills 10-6
    3-Pats 9-7
4- Jets 5 or less wins.
Bills will take the #1 WC spot and secure it early.
