Bills Odd Guy Will Be?

The draft is now complete and the Bills did indeed do what they wanted and got in their eyes the QB of the future. EJ Manuel may or may not start next year but I can really see him competing at a high level for the job. The question then becomes if he does win the job, which of their quarterbacks currently on the roster are out of a job?

I know this is a little early to talk about but definitely is something to think about. The way new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett runs is offense could be the determining factor. The recent signing of Kevin Kolb is something that I thought about when I heard it because everyone knew a QB was going to come off the board at some time during this draft. Is this the guy that the Bills want to start and/or backup the newly drafted rookie? Was Tarvaris Jackson’s contract he signed just insurance in case the Bills were unable to do anything in the offseason? I wonder who this team will have more faith in to lead the offense or be the trustworthy backup.

I think when this decision is made Jackson will remain on the roster. From what I have seen his play is closer to Manuel’s and will be better for Hackett to have everyone on the same page. I really don’t have that much interest in Kolb but have wondered if he stayed healthy would he come into his own. The problem is him staying healthy.

That being said one guy will be on the outside and looking for another team. I just can’t see one of those guys being the 3rd ranked QB on the roster. I know Jackson was inactive last season but this upcoming season will be a different story.

Which QB will remain with the Bills next season?

You’re on to something here. It seemed that Buffalo was very quick to resign him soon after hiring Marrone; having watched a lot of Syracuse football last year, it seemed to me that the new staff likes QBs that can throw downfield accurately and effectively when asked to. Jackson did that very well both in Seattle and in Minnesota, when given the opportunity. Obviously that was one of the reasons Ryan Fitzpatrick was given his walking papers; many of his INTs came from inaccuracy and lack of arm strength on long throws.

I think Kevin Kolb should be given a full chance to see what he has left after being beaten up behind some very BAD offensive lines the past few seasons. Of the three (Manuel, Jackson, and Kolb) I think he has the weakest arm …. so he’d probably be the odd man out, if it came to that. Jackson has a fairly small one-year contract, with a lot of triggers built in – so he might be more of a deal to keep financially, as well. If Buffalo signs any more QBs between now and training camp, I think that may be a sign that one or more of the three they already have is having trouble in Marrone’s new offense. Somehow, though, I don’t think that will happen – unless someone gets injured. These three on the roster are all VERY smart, knowledgeable, teachable guys, who have skill sets that mesh well with West Coast-style offenses with wrinkles thrown in … so, the opportunity is there for one of them to step up and grab the bull by the horn. It’ll be one of the highlights of training camp, for sure.
