2013 NFL Draft: Buffalo Bills and the 143rd pick

The Buffalo Bills have been able to help themselves out on both sides of the ball.  They have drafted QB EJ Manuel, WRs Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin, LB Kiko Alonso, and Safety Duke Williams.  With all of these picks, minus EJ Manuel they have also added players that can and should excel on special teams as well.

At this point the draft for the Buffalo Bills has been successful in my eyes and if we had no more picks I would be very happy with the outcome at this point.

This is not the case, the Bills do have 3 more picks, 1 in each of the next upcoming rounds (5-7).

With the 143rd overall pick the Buffalo Bills stay on the defensive side of the ball and take Safety Jonathan Meeks out of Clemson.  Meeks is a 6′ Safety that had 62 tackles and 2 interceptions last year.  In his college career he has been able to come away with 157 tackles and 7 interceptions.

I am not completely sure with this pick as I still think the Bills need a Guard and would have figured one in the 3rd round.  I still like the Bills draft up to this point but would like to see a guard at some point as well.

A guard may turn up from one of the remaining picks, or there’s always free agency and picking up players from other teams. Lot of time between now and the first game of the season, so we’ll see. I think that the last couple of drafts have brought guard and tackle talent to this team that (a) hasn’t had a chance to play yet because of injury, and (b) suffered from being around a sub-par coaching staff.

Hopefully, those issues won’t reappear, and we’ll see the fruit of those drafts as well. But I think you’re right – this is a great draft for the team, it fills some holes, and positions the coaches to really be able to do a lot of things in all phases of the game. I’m more than pleased with EJ Manuel (I thought he’s be the selection if they decided that Ryan Nassib either wasn’t a good fit, or wasn’t as talented as Manuel is), and I also think that Robert Woods could have “steal of the draft” potential at WR.

I know that there will be naysayers (especially from SI and Peter King), and the Bills will be graded poorly on their selections by many people …. but I think that this is a treasure trove of potential talent; and EJ Manuel looks to me to have the chance to be a taller, stronger-armed Russell Wilson. THAT would be a beautiful thing to watch!
