With the NFL Draft less than a week away we have all seen the many mock drafts having the Bills taking a quarterback, offensive lineman, wide receiver and even a defensive back but what about linebacker? Looking at this linebacker core one has to think they’re going to need help at that position. When free agency opened earlier this year the Bills did sign LB Manny Lawson.
Even with that signing the Bills current roster is only showing six linebackers with any experience and only three have more than 2 years’ under their belt. These guys include: Manny Lawson, Arthur Moats, Bryan Scott, Kelvin Sheppard, Nigel Bradham and Chris White. Now I know the Bills have some rookies also on the roster but these guys are the ones in the games playing every week. This year is a year were some of these guys will definitely get more playing time and have a chance to prove themselves but what happens if they flop? Another season of sub-par linebacker play and we see teams continue to move the ball up and down the field. I have no problem with this organization believing and giving a chance to its own picks but also we need at least another veteran that can play and play well. It just seems to me after signing Lawson we haven’t heard anything about the Bills and the linebacker position.
Another thing to look at will be the schemes that the new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will have in place. Is that what’s holding this team from potentially landing another linebacker? Is there one they will like in the draft? Hopefully questions will be answered soon and this team can continue to build and progress.
