The Syracuse Connection

By now we all know Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone came from Syracuse. We also have come to realize that a number of people from his coaching staff has also joined the Bills organization. Will key players from the Orange follow as well?

Well Buffalo has been rumoured to be one of the landing spots for QB Ryan Nassib. He has the prototypical size at 6’3″ & 230lbs. Plus he passed for over 3,700 yards in his final season with the Orange. The big question we have to ask ourselves, is who else from Syracuse are the Bills interested in? Well on Sunday, according to Chris Brown at Buffalobills.com, the Bills held a private workout, not only for Nassib, but for offensive lineman Zach Chibane, WR Alec Lemon, WR Marcus Sales and TE David Stevens. The staff is obviously well aware of how the players have performed in the past but they are performing their due diligence and comparing them against other NFL Prospects.

Of the players in attendance at the workout Wide Receivers Sales and Lemon could be potential NFL stars. Sales (originally from Syracuse) finished the 2012 with over 800 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. Sales also has some interesting connections with Giants wideout Hakeem Nicks. Both players not only share the same agent, but Sales is also training with Nicks’ former speed coach Derek Touchette. Meanwhile Alec Lemon has been developing a strong rapport with Nassib as they both have been working together at team workouts/pro days. Lemon has also been working with Fischer Sports in Arizona, focusing on agility and speed.

It will be interesting to see if a number of Undrafted Orange players are brought in because of their familiarity with Coach Marrone. We all saw it with Chan Gailey and the Georgia Tech program and how that turned out. So will the Syracuse connection be good or bad, or is it just more of bringing in a player you know, rather than a player you don’t know.
