Mike Pettine took a hard look at the NFL and the way it has started to lean. Lean as in the way that the offenses around the league are beginning to develop towards; a running quarterback. With this he brought in two defensive guys to help the defense out combat the running quarterback in Chuck Driesbach, LB coach and Donnie Henderson, secondary coach.
With Driesbach and Henderson, Pettine brought these guys in from the college ranks as they have seem more of the Spread offense and the Run Option offense than anyone else on the coaching staff.

“There’s no substitute for that experience, for actually having defended it,” said Pettine. “I can look at all the tape of it, and study college tape and having guys that have gone through it that have schemed against it, taught it, it was a tremendous get for us to be able to add not just that coaching experience overall, but defending that style of offense.”
I think this was a good move for Pettine and the Bills D. From 2010 to 2011 there was an increase in option run plays by more than 400% and by the end of this year there was a total 515 option run plays run from the measly 49 that was run in 2010.
