Report Card: Bills Defense

For the most part the defense has been able to hold on and at times really keep the Bills in games and in some cases win the games for the Bills because of the lack of offensive production.  Part of this was the case this week.  The defense kept the Colts at bay and they were able to keep the team in the game and did not allow for the Colts to run away with it.  The Colts won by only a TD and you wonder what would have happened if the Special Teams could have tackled on the punt return.  Overall, the defense did not play completely terrible.  There were at time the tackling issue and coverage issues that they have had all year.  One play, Wannstedt is in Man Coverage, and Andrew Luck runs on them.  They gave up some plays that were 20+ yards, but so did the Colts.  Really what you’re looking at is did the defense play and make a difference in the game.  In this game, they did make a difference but it was not enough to sway the outcome of the game, but again what would have happened without the punt return for the TD.  Would the defense have stopped and the momentum change and allow the offense to score a TD.  At this point we can only ask those questions and look back.  Overall the defense did not play horrible and will get a grade of a C+.  Improvements could be made but they did keep a struggling offense in the game.
