The Vince Young signing has at least one more fan: current Bills starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick was a guest on SiriusXM radio today and addressed the Young signing, among other topics. Fitz indicated that Bills management kept him in the loop throughout the process of signing Young:
“Buddy Nix has been a guy that has been very fair to all his players, he’s been a guy who’s been trying to create a competitive atmosphere,” said Fitzpatrick. ”Buddy caught me in the hallway one day and said, ‘Look, we’re looking to create some competition for that number two spot at quarterback, we are bringing in Vince Young. We made him an offer. We’ll see if he comes. But just to let you know, obviously, you are our guy and we are just trying to get better at every position.’
It’s clear that Nix and the rest of the Bills front office values honesty, and Fitz is very appreciative of that:
“When people are upfront and honest with you and telling you what is going on, then it makes everything go much smoother.”
Fitz doesn’t see the Young signing as a sign that he needs to play well this year to keep his job: he knows that already:
“And for me, I’m a guy that’s got to go out there and perform, and I know that, just like every quarterback in the league knows that.”
So anyone who had concerns that bringing in Young would cause issues with Fitz and the locker room: don’t worry. Everyone knows the quarterback pecking order on this team.
