When many of you were throwing around the idea that the Bills had any sort of shot at superstar free agent defensive end Mario Williams, I couldn’t help but laugh it off. Big-name, big-money free agents in their primes just don’t come to Buffalo. Period.
Even when reports began to surface that Williams was going to visit the Bills tonight, it didn’t really set in. This really can’t be happening, can it?
Well, guess what? The Bills have just announced that Williams has landed in Buffalo for a free-agent visit.
Now, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. “Visiting” is a long ways away from “signing.” But the fact that Williams 1) is actually visiting Buffalo and 2) has made Western New York his first free agent visit means that interest is real and serious from both sides.
We really can’t overstate how big of a signing this would be for the Bills. Not only is Williams one of the very best at his position, but he would fill a huge need on this team. Instantly, Buffalo’s pass rush goes from “terrible” to at least “dangerous.”
This is really getting ahead of ourselves, but imagine this: the Bills sign Williams and then use the #10 pick in the draft on another top DE like Quinton Coples. That’s a starting defensive line of Mario Williams and Coples at the ends and Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus at the tackles. Holy crap that’s a good D-line.
Obviously that’s still a dream…but for once, Bills fans, a crazy dream could really become reality in Buffalo.
