With the re-signings this week of Stevie Johnson, Scott Chandler, and Kirk Morrison, the Buffalo depth chart certainly looks better than it did seven days ago.
But there’s still some pretty gaping holes to fill.
Defensive End: Right now your starters would two of these three: Shawne Merriman (a broken down 3-4 LB), Kyle Moore (a journeyman with zero sacks in three NFL seasons), or Chris Kelsay (or as he’s often called, “fucking Chris Kelsay”).
#2 Wide Receiver: Lots of possibilities on the current roster. And there’s a decent chance none of them are good enough.
Cornerback: See wide receiver.
So fortunately free agency is just around the corner, and even more fortunately there’s some pretty good players available at these positions. Here’s a list of potential guys:
DE: Mario Williams is obviously the big prize. But he’s going to command $13-15 million or so. Do you honestly believe the Bills would shell out that much? I certainly don’t. But there’s other options. I really like Mark Anderson from the Pats, who had 10 sacks last season. Israel Idonje from the Bears is solid, especially against the run.
WR: The prize here in Vincent Jackson. He’s been super productive despite being miserable in San Diego. Again, it might cost more to get him than the Bills paid Stevie Johnson. Other options include Mario Manningham, Brandon Lloyd, and Marques Colston. I don’t think Buffalo will get any of them, though. This will be a position likely addressed in the draft.
CB: Cortland Finnegan’s a punk, but I’d rather he be our punk. Tracy Porter from the Saints is pretty young and pretty good. Brandon Carr is also pretty good, and he’ll get a lot of money.
At the end of the day, I just don’t see the Bills bringing any of these guys in. The Bills just don’t spend money in free agency. But we’ll see.
