Well, it was a fun ride while it lasted.
The Bills fell from the ranks of the unbeaten today, losing to Cincinnati 23-20 on a last-second field goal by Mike Nugent. After feeling tremendous emotional highs after Buffalo’s big come-from-behind wins the past two weeks, this is a big stomach punch. Today, the comeback tables were turned on the Bills, as Cincy roared back from a 17-3 halftime deficit to take the win.
There’s a lot to feel miserable about after this one. Buffalo’s offense crashed back to earth after a spectacular start to the season. The defense completely folded in the fourth quarter after a strong start. The referees made some truly awful calls, highlighted by a bizarre moment in the fourth quarter when a first-down reception by Stevie Johnson was ruled an incomplete pass for no good reason…then upheld by video replay somehow.
But make no mistake: the Bengals earned this one. My concerns from earlier in the week were certainly justified here. Cincy won’t win the Super Bowl, but they have a strong defense and the Andy Dalton-led offense is no joke.
It’s going to be a tough week for the Bills, as this was a game Buffalo really could have used if the team has hopes of a playoff push. Now, an angry, desperate Eagles team comes to town next week. There’s going to be a lot riding on that one for both squads.
