According to the Twitter feed of ESPN insider Adam Schefter, there is now a free agency timeline in place for the NFL.
This Afternoon – Teams can sign their own free agents. Teams can also begin talking to unrestricted free agents. (I believe this also includes undrafted rookies.) Teams can also discuss trades. (Trades would not take effect until Saturday.)
Noon on Tuesday – Teams can sign unrestricted free agents. Contracts would not take effect until Aug. 2.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – Teams report to camp and presumably offically vote on re-certifying the union and ratifying the new collective bargaining agreement. That should just be a formality. I’m not clear yet on when the Bills would report. Two teams, the Jets and Texans, would not report until Sunday.
Saturday – Trades are official.
Tuesday, August 2, 4 p.m. – The league year officially begins. All new contracts are in effect.
There should be a flurry of news in coming weeks. Hold on to your hats.
