Marcell Dareus is going to be a very wealthy man one day in the very near future.
Unfortunately for the #3 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, that day is not today. Thanks to the NFL lockout, the Bills’ top selection hasn’t been able to negotiate for the contract that will soon pay him millions of dollars per year. And without that contract, Dareus has been forced to find another way to keep the lights on and put food on the table.
So how’s Marcell spending his time?
As you can see, Marcell is keeping busy. Besides staying in shape, he has a job as a landscaper. Pulling weeds and mowing lawns isn’t quite as glamorous as his future career as an NFL star is going to be, but he seems to feel okay about it. “I love doing lawns. Cutting grass, pulling weeds…it’s just something that kind of eases your mind.”
I highly recommend checking out the CNN story that accompanied the above video. If you haven’t heard about Dareus’s background, it’s an inspiring story. Marcell’s mother was more or less out of commission due to chronic illness, leaving her seven children in a difficult situation.
Fortunately, a former drill sergeant-turned-landscaper named Lester “Sarge” Reasor and his wife Juanita took Marcell in. Sarge enjoyed having Marcell around – the landscaper had too many lawns to do and needed help.
“God sent (Marcell and his brothers) right here in the nick of time to save me,” said Sarge, whom Dareus refers to as his godfather.
Dareus seems like an awesome guy, and I’m excited that he’s coming to Buffalo. His attitude is amazing – he’s not at all complaining or feeling bad about himself that he’s not sitting in a pool filled with $100 bills right now. He’s happy to have a job, and knows his time is coming.
If you’re worried that he’s spending too much time working, don’t be. Dareus says he’ll be ready to go once the lockout ends.
“I’m really anxious about the season starting,” said Dareus. “I can’t wait to get to Buffalo to see the fans. I can’t wait to get the whole feeling of the NFL. It’s surreal.”
