James Harrison: At Least He’s Not Boring

facebooktwitterreddit

I can’t lie…I probably picked the worst time possible to become an NFL blogger. This lockout has meant that pretty much nothing has really happened all summer on the football front. Not the easiest time to write about the NFL.

Adding to the difficulty is the fact that the Bills…well, the current Bills aren’t exactly the most attention-attracting bunch. There’s certainly some fun personalities (Stevie Johnson comes to mind) and classy individuals (Brian Moorman, Jairus Byrd, and no doubt a ton of others), but not really guys who are constantly creating stories of media interest.

That brings me to James Harrison’s…interesting comments. If you missed it, Harrison tore into teammates (Rashard Mendenhall and Ben Roethlisberger) as well as NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. I know this story broke a few days ago, but I’ve sort of needed a few days to process my own thoughts on the matter.

Harrison’s been getting absolutely torn apart in the media. But really, should we be all that upset with what he said?

Now, what Harrison said wasn’t very smart. He made some crazy statements, and he probably wishes he could take a few of them back. Particularly the comments about his teammates. And while I’m not the world’s biggest Roger Goodell fan by any stretch, I’m certainly not going to defend Harrison’s statement that “If [Goodell] was on fire and I had to piss to put him out, I wouldn’t do it.”

But – if we ignore Harrison’s insane “I’d be unwilling to save Roger Goodell from a horrifically painful death” comment – were Harrison’s comments really that bad? I don’t think so! Heck, I found them pretty entertaining! Calling former Patriots-turned awful commentators Rodney Harrison and Tedy Bruschi “clowns?” Hilarious! Flat-out stating that Texans linebacker Brian Cushing is still on steriods? Awesome!

You might disagree, but I wish football had a few more guys like James Harrison: guys willing to speak their minds and do some trash talking. Man, pro sports is ENTERTAINMENT! I can’t be the only one who can’t stand the “Tom Brady” style interview. You know, “Well, we just gave it 110% each day and take it one game at a time. The [insert opponents] are a great team and we’re happy to get out of here with a win.”

Forget that crap. If I have to listen to one more interview like that, I’m gonna ram a Q-tip into my eardrums. Come on guys…be entertaining! Mix it up a bit! If you think an opponent is a punk, let us know! I want to see some GENUINE rivalries out there.

Now, I love cheering for the current Bills. Seems like a bunch of stand-up, classly guys. But I’d like to see a little more James Harrison in some of the Bills. Talk some smack. Entertain me.

And for the love of God, give me  something to write about.
