Mainstream Love for Kyle Williams? From Peter King of All People? Madness!

Kyle Williams

Williams has won over at least one member of the media.

I’ll be blunt: I’m not a big fan of Sports Illustrated football writer/NBC Sunday Night Football talking head Peter King. For every actual great piece of information he unearths, you have to wade through 30 items of King complaining about how “difficult” it is to travel on Sports Illustrated’s dime, King talking about coffee, King mentioning all the famous people that he knows, and so on. At least Brett Favre finally retired so there’s not three pages about him each week in the colum. (You should really check out the fantastic takedown the brilliant Kissing Suzy Kolber does with King’s Monday Morning Quarterback column every week. Simply amazing.)

However, Mr. King is suddenly flying up my list of favorite writers! Why, may you ask? Because , unlike a lot of the jackasses in the mainstream media, I think King actually cares enough about his job to watch some NFL game film. Including game film featuring bad teams like Buffalo.

I know King must care, because King actually put Buffalo’s freaking awesome defensive tackle Kyle Williams in his list of the top 100 players in the league. And not just sneaking in at the bottom of the list:

King has Williams all the way up at #27. Not as high as ProFootballFocus ranking him at # 3, but I can certainly live with this. After all, that’s pretty high praise considering he’s a defensive tackle playing for a lousy defense, but King backs up his selection:

“Watch some video of [Williams]. He consistently occupies two blockers. Always moving forward. A machine. I remember talking to Chan Gailey about him last year. This is a man who coached Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin — and I do believe I have never heard him rave about any player the way he raved to me about Williams.”
In bonus news, Stevie Johnson is also on King’s list of the NFL’s top players, sneaking in at #94. Two Bills on a mainstream writer’s top 100 list? Amazing.
So kudos to you, Mr. King. Perhaps I’ve misjudged you. I’m just glad that people are starting to notice there is a very special player hiding out up in Western New York.
