As we talked about yesterday, Donte Whitner decided to run his mouth via Twitter this weekend in response to Buffalo drafting two defensive backs in the team’s first four picks. In Donte’s world, this was no doubt just another slap in the face, another insult handed down by the Bills’ front office.
But Whitner wasn’t the only member of Buffalo’s secondary wondering about his future after the draft. Starting cornerback (and current free agent) Drayton Florence also seemed to think his time in Buffalo was over after the Bills’ selection of Texas cornerback Aaron Williams, tweeting: “Congrats Arron williams I guess im done in buffalo enjoyed it while it lasted bills have the best fans!!!”
(By the way, kudos to Florence for expressing himself in a way 6000% more professional than Whitner.)
But what does the team’s management think about the possibility of Whitner and Florence returning to Buffalo?
Buddy Nix, in an interview with Shredd and Ragan on WEDG 103.3 to talk about the draft, made the organization’s stance pretty clear. Whitner’s not coming back, but hopefully Florence is.
“Drayton Florence, absolutely not,” Nix said when asked if the two were done in Buffalo. “We think Drayton wants to be here, and we want him here. We’re going to try to sign Drayton Florence. Donte Whitner, I don’t think wants to be here, and he probably won’t.”

As I’ve said before, I think Whitner’s a good safety. But he’s not a great safety and he wants to be paid like one. Sorry, not happening. It’s best for all concerned if he moves on.
I do hope the team can bring Florence back. He played well last season, and you can never have enough good corners. There’s a chance Buffalo has a really good set of corners next season if Florence comes back, Terrence McGee stays healthy, and Leodis McKelvin and Aaron Williams play to their potential. That’s a lot of “ifs,” admittedly, but the potential is fun to think about.
