The good thing about this evening’s portion of the draft (starting at 6 p.m.) is that we won’t have to wait long for Buffalo’s first pick. The Bills will make the second selection of the second round tonight.
So who will be Buffalo’s pick?
ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay both have the Bills taking a linebacker, as Kiper has the Bills taking Martez Wilson of Illinois and McShay has Buffalo selecting UCLA’s Akeem Ayers. I like Ayers a little more than Wilson. Not sure if Wilson’s a value at #34. Ayers has great pass-rush skills and great coverage skills, both traits sorely lacking among Bills linebackers currently.
One linebacker I’d love to see the Bills manage to nab is Arizona’s Brooks Reed. He’s got elite pass-rush skills and would fit nicely in the 3-4 defense. He’s not fantastic against the run, but holy crap does Buffalo need SOMEONE who can pressure the quarterback a bit on third down.
Speaking of quarterbacks, that’s another option for Buffalo with this pick. If they go in that direction, it will almost certainly be one of three guys – Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallett, and Colin Kaepernick. I think Dalton and Mallett are way more likely than Kaepernick. As I’ve mentioned before, I love Kaepernick. But I just don’t see it happening. Dalton and Mallett are decent values at this point and if Buddy Nix decides he needs a QB, you could do worse. I’d prefer Dalton over Mallett.
Dark horse possibilities include North Carolina DE Da’Quan Bowers and Notre Dame TE Kyle Rudolph. Bowers is a huge talent with a bum knee. He’d also fit better in a 4-3 than a 3-4 defense. Don’t think he’ll be the guy. I’m on record as saying Buffalo shouldn’t take a tight end early in this draft, but man is Rudolph interesting. Good hands, fast, and tough.
Gut feeling? Bills will take Ayers. We’ll see tonight!
